James Eagan Holmes, the suspect in Friday’s massacre at a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado, had planned the shooting attack for weeks. According to news sources, the 24-year-old had begun collecting weapons as early as May and had also booby-trapped his apartment located close to the theatre.
James Eagan Holmes is the prime suspect in the shooting at a suburban movie theatre in Colorado at the midnight premiere of the highly-anticipated Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Holmes shot at random people who were present inside the building, killing twelve and injured dozens of others.
Law enforcement officials revealed that James Holmes had begun legally purchasing weapons and ammunition in May to be used in the mass murder. Holmes also filled his apartment, located approximately five miles from the theater, with explosives.
According to sources, the police took hold of the stash at the Century 16 Movie Theaters complex in Aurora, Colorado when James Holmes was taken into custody shortly after the mass shooting. The police found two 40-caliber Glock handguns, a Remington 870 single-barrel shotgun and a Smith and a Wesson AR-15 assault-style rifle at the crime scene which were all confiscated along with Holmes' white Hyundai.
Meanwhile, Aurora police chief Dan Oates told reporters that the buildings around James Holmes' apartment building had been evacuated while authorities determined how to remove the trip wires and explosives inside.
"It's a very vexing problem, how to enter that apartment safely," Oates said, according to NBC. "I personally have never seen anything like what the pictures showed us ... Jars full of ammunition, jars full of liquid."
Sgt. Cassidee Carlson, an Aurora Police Department spokesperson told reporters on Saturday that the police managed to diffuse the first trip wire that was set to kill anyone entering the apartment. A more controlled detonation will be planned and carried out soon, he added.
Moreover, the law enforcement agencies did not release any information about a motive.
"If we have information about a motive we would not share it," Oates said.
Warner Bros., the studio behind "The Dark Knight Rises," issued a statement on Friday saying that the company was deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."
The film's red carpet Paris premiere on Friday was also cancelled.
